Zovirax is used in the treatment of certain infections with herpes viruses. These include genital herpes, shingles, and chickenpox.

The active ingredient in Zovirax is Aciclovir (or acyclovir). Aciclovir (acyclovir) is an antiviral agent that is highly active against Herpes Simplex (HSV) type 1 and 2 viruses.

Cold sores are usually proceeded by a feeling of tingling, burning, itching, or numbness in the spot where the Cold sore is developing. Zovirax, when applied at this stage, will inhibit the development of the cold sore to the skin.

If the cold sore has already appeared, the unique antiviral action of Zovirax Cold Sore Cream can help speed the healing of your cold sore.

Precautions

Zovirax cream should not be used in or near the eyes.

If you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to Zovirax or similar drugs (containing Aciclovir) you should not take this medication.

Always wash your hands after touching cold sores for they are infectious.

Avoid touching your eyes.

Do not use saliva to wet contact lenses.

Avoid breaking the blister and picking the scabs.

Not only can you infect your fingers with the virus - you may infect your cold sore with other germs (e.g. bacteria).

Avoid sharing your eating and drinking utensils.

Avoid sharing the same towel with other people.

Application

Apply the Zovirax to the affected area 5 times daily about every 4 hours (after washing your hands thoroughly).

If you forget a treatment apply some as soon as you remember, then continue as before.

Continue treatment for 5 days.

If your cold sore has not been treated after this time, treatment may be continued for up to a further 5 days.

Do not exceed the stated dose.

Common side effects may include

  • Burning, itching, mild pain, skin rash, stinging and genital inflammation.
  • Transient mild stinging immediately following application of Zovirax may occur in a small proportion of patients.
  • Local irritation and inflammation.
